Better Together: STEM Educators Academy Research Brief

Julianne Kanter

Julianne Kanter is a Senior Research Associate at ExpandED Schools.

Think about it: for young people, learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is a lot like learning a new language. And just like becoming fluent in French or conversant in Cantonese, students need opportunities to practice their STEM skills in immersive, hands-on ways, both in and out of the classroom, to gain a thorough understanding of these disciplines.

STEM Educators Academy Research Brief

Enter the STEM Educators Academy. ExpandED Schools launched this initiative in 2013 to offer young people such learning experiences through programs that combine classroom and “real world” learning opportunities. We do this by enabling classroom science teachers and community educators to engage in joint professional development at premiere science institutions and then work together back at their schools to teach maker design projects that spark student interest and cultivate curiosity in STEM subjects.

We are excited to release a report on the promising findings of our STEM Educators Academy. The collaborative model has generated positive impacts—not only on classroom and community educators, but also on the young people who participate in these STEM activities. Read this report and discover practical, feasible solutions to help your school or community build strong STEM learning activities that connect across the learning day.
