Why Closing the Learning Gap Matters to Soledad O'Brien

Soledad O'Brien
Thursday, December 17, 2015
Here’s something that shakes me. Children born into poverty are likely to suffer a 6,000-hour learning gap by the time they reach 6th grade. It doesn’t take much to close this gap. Just two minutes of your time, and a belief that all kids deserve these experiences. Read full post

When "The New York Times" wrote about the booming popularity of story time at libraries across the city, it offered a promising view of revamped read aloud practices. Increasingly, people are paying attention to the evidence on the vital importance of early exposure to reading and literacy activities, and the positive impact it has on children’s futures. As the prevalence of story times has grown, families, caregivers and teachers have been drawn to these opportunities to introduce new stories and activities into their children’s worlds. Yesterday's passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act maintains a separate funding stream for 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which includes after-school, before-school, summer or expanded learning time. We were successful in preserving 21st Century in the bill in part because the broad field of those who wish to close the learning gap came together. Read full post

If it weren't for drama class and being in school musicals, I'd still be afraid of public speaking. Dance class helped me come out of my shell and be comfortable with the uncomfortable. Photography taught me to focus and appreciate my surroundings. Basketball taught me sportsmanship and how to work as part of a team. These enrichment opportunities taught me life lessons and helped me become the woman I am today. Please join me in giving today, so that more kids can discover their talents and develop their potential. Read full post

ExpandED Schools Staffer Is an Emerging Leader

Saskia Traill
Monday, December 7, 2015
The NYC Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers celebrated leaders in social work yesterday at their annual celebration. Marissa Martin, our Director of Policy and Government Relations, accepted an Emerging Leader award for putting her community organizing expertise to work at ExpandED Schools and before that, at the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families. The 2015 cohort of emerging leaders were more than inspiring—they were a strong reminder that passion, a natural desire for collaboration, and a deep and genuine belief in equity and caring for others runs deep in the veins of many a New Yorker. Why I've Joined the ExpandED Schools Mission to Close the Learning Gap

Joseph Mensah
Tuesday, December 1, 2015
Over the last ten years, I have spent many hours mentoring young boys from inner city Boston, New Haven and New York City. The most fulfilling aspect of my involvement is that I learn as much from the kids as they do from me. It did not take long for me to realize that these children are no different from their more privileged peers – curious and enthusiastic scholars who love learning. On this Giving Tuesday, please join me in helping to close the learning gap. Read full post
