Robert D. Joffe, Presiding Partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, was elected today to chair the Board of Directors of The After-School Corporation. Mr. Joffe replaces Robert K. Steel, who resigned from the board upon being confirmed as the U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance.
Pedro A. Noguera, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education, was elected secretary of the TASC board. Mr. Joffe previously held that position.
Mr. Joffe has served as a TASC board member since 2001. He is also Vice-Chair of Human Rights First and a member of the Board of Trustees of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Dr. Noguera, who is a professor in the Steinhardt School of Education at New York University, joined the board in 2005. Both also serve on the governing committee of The Center for After-School Excellence, a new TASC initiative that is collaborating with CUNY and other colleges and universities to create the first comprehensive system of professional development for the after-school workforce.
The After-School Corporation is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to make high quality after-school programs universally available to children, and a public responsibility. TASC works to enhance the quality and availability of after-school programs in New York and beyond. The organization currently partners with schools and community-based organizations to support after-school programs serving more than 40,000 students and after-school staff.
TASC president Lucy D. Friedman welcomed both board members to their new positions. "In his years of service to the board, Bob Joffe has demonstrated great leadership in helping TASC progress toward our goal of assuring that every student in New York has access to a strong after-school program," she said. "His commitment to public service is profound, and we are honored that he has chosen to chair our board."
Dr. Friedman noted the expertise that Dr. Noguera brings to board leadership. "I don't think anyone has done more than Pedro Noguera to research, analyze and describe in an accessible way the challenges that confront students and families in big city school systems," she said. "We're delighted he will take an even more prominent role as a board officer."
