WABC-TV reports on a pilot program at PS 636/Young Scholars Academy for Discovery and Exploration to expand the school day by at least 30 percent beyond the traditional school day. The After-School Corporation is managing this 10-school pilot in partnership with the New York City Department Of Education. Each participating school is partnering with a community organization to expand the school day and to offer more time for both academics and enrichments. At this school, which is partnering with the University Settlement Society, enrichments include robotics, capoeira (a form of Brazilian martial arts), basketball and cheerleading.

The three-year pilot is expected is part of a larger national movement to test whether giving kids more time to learn, and more ways to learn, will help them be more successful not only academically, but in 21st century skills such as teamwork and critical thinking.
