A big, pink after-school project got kids thinking about college.

NY 1 aired a report on a collaborative effort by kids in three New York City after-school programs to build what they believe is the world's largest piggy bank. Kids who attend TASC-supported programs at PS 163 in Manhattan and PS 182 in Queens built the pig's head and tale. Kids from JHS 22 in the Bronx built the 14-foot body. They filled the piggy bank not with money, but with index cards containing their wishes for college and the future. Artists and instructors with the New York City nonprofit organization LeAp led kids in their construction project. "We want all children to know they can achieve their dreams," said Ila Lane Gross, LeAp's executive director. "Our piggy bank symbolizes the importance of setting goals, staying in school and working hard."

Funding for the project was provided by Upromise.
