TASC AmeriCorps members "greened" East River Park with trowels and paint scrapers.
About 150 TASC AmeriCorps members, who work in after-school programs all across New York City helping kids do service in their communities, spent a Saturday painting fences and benches and pulling weeds in East River Park along the FDR Drive in East Harlem. They were among 1200 volunteers who gathered for a rally to kick off of AmeriCorps Week at an event called "Getting Green Done!"
With encouragement from Governor David Paterson, who attended the rally, volunteers went out into the community to distribute energy efficient light bulbs, plant trees and map community environmental needs.
