If you're looking for a literacy project that inspires high school kids to channel their creativity into active learning, TASC President Lucy Friedman recommends you read "Manga High", Michael Bitz's profile of an after-school comics club at Martin Luther King Jr. High School in Manhattan. TASC is tremendously proud of being part of the creation of Mr. Bitz's Comic Book Project, which was widely piloted in TASC's New York City programs beginning in 2001, and has since spread to after-school programs across the country.

This book focuses on the role of manga (Japanese style comics) in the lives of kids who attend the Opening Doors and Building Bridges program at the school. It also provides compelling evidence that there are many non-traditional pathways to literacy and learning.
