Yesterday President Obama issued a call for Americans to tackle the toughest challenges in their communities though social entrepreneurship and volunteerism. The administration rolled out its "Social Innovation and Civic Engagement" initiative at a special event at the White House, which featured TASC Board member Geoffrey Canada, CEO of the Harlem Children's Zone, as a real-world example of the power of local action. TASC was represented at the event by Mark Levine, who heads our Center for After-School Excellence.
The centerpiece of the president's announcement was the new $50 million Social Innovation Fund, which will provide capital to bolster local initiatives in fields such as education, job training, and health care. The official "notice of funds availability" for this pool of capital is expected to be released in the fall.
