One in five kids at PS 636 in Bedford-Stuyvesant is homeless and living at one of 10 area shelters, the article notes, but all students at the elementary school now have the opportunity to participate in enriching after-school activities every school day. The activities, which include cooking classes, sports, robotics and fencing, are managed by University Settlement.
PS 363 is part of the ELT/NYC initiative, a pilot program to expand learning time in 11 NYC public schools by at least 30 percent. TASC manages the initiative in partnership with the New York City Department of Education and Department of Youth and Community Development.
