A group of about 20 students at PS/MS 3 are trying to convince the parks department to spruce up five acres of football and soccer fields in their neighborhood. In September, they attended a Community Board meeting to present a letter they had written on behalf of their classmates. District Manager Ivine Galarza has since promised to set up a meeting for the students with Bronx Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte.
The students are part of a TASC-supported after-school program run by the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO). They are undertaking the project as part of the Community Justice Project, an enrichment program that introduces students to police and court officers and encourages them to become advocates for their peers.
