A recent “Making a Difference” segment on NBC Nightly News focused on After School Matters (ASM), a Chicago-based nonprofit that runs after-school programs for teenagers. The segment features ASM’s apprenticeship program, in which high school students undergo several weeks of intensive training to work with younger kids in arts and sports programs. TASC’s After-School Apprenticeship Program is an adaptation of this model.
In addition, NBC posted an extended interview with Chicago’s first lady, Maggie Daley, who spearheaded the effort nearly 20 years ago. In it, she discusses the origins of the organization, their apprenticeship model and the importance of providing after-school programs for teens.
ASM and TASC are both partners in the Collaborative for Building After-School Systems (CBASS).
