Under the preliminary New York City budget proposed today by Mayor Bloomberg, 4,110 New York City kids will lose their daily, comprehensive, city-funded after-school programs in the coming year due to cuts in the city’s Out-of-School Time initiative. Another 1,940 middle school students will lose summer programs. Taking into account proposed cuts to both city and state budgets, TASC projects that cumulatively some 16,550 elementary and middle school-aged kids in New York City stand to lose their after-school and summer programs. The city also proposes to reduce by six percent funding for 66 city-funded Beacon programs, which serve kids in their neighborhoods after school.
Some 35,052 fewer high-school-aged New Yorkers will have jobs this coming summer through the Summer Youth Employment Program, compared to 2009. Under the proposed preliminary budget, the city proposes to reduce spending on SYEP by about $1 million. Taking into account proposed cuts to both city and state budgets, just 17,200 young people would have jobs this coming summer.
