New York City students who attended middle school after-school programs had better attendance in ninth grade, and earned more credits, than students who did not, according to an independent analysis of students in after-school programs supported by The After-School Corporation (TASC).

That catalytic event led to passage the following year of far-reaching federal legislation designed to boost the nation's scientific literacy and enhance its production of scientists. Today, a different catalyst - the threat to U.S. competitiveness in the global economy - has prompted calls for new government action to stimulate our once-again-faltering pipeline of young scientists.
