In recent years, the proportion of families with children under age six in which both parents work has grown to more than 60 percent of all U.S. households. Although these families depend on a broad range of child care arrangements, including child care centers and providers’ homes, the majority of young children from low-income families receive care from relatives, neighbors and friends in more informal settings. Supporting these family, friend and neighbor (FFN) caregivers is therefore critical to promoting early childhood success.
In the past year, the YEF Institute has worked with cities that partner with local United Ways and other community organizations to improve the school readiness of children in FFN care. This call will highlight promising practices emerging from these local collaborations. Speakers will also delve into issues such as the economic impact of early learning investments and the importance of providing caregivers with culturally appropriate school readiness resources.
