This report reviews the need, the benefits, and public opinion on after-school programs for children and youth. Building on an earlier review of the literature on after-school programs, it incorporates new findings drawn from a search of education, social work, criminal justice, psychological, and public opinion research since 1993. After-school programs offer a sound response to the need for a safe place for kids after-school hours and to help face higher academic demands. They offer children safe and supervised places to go after school, and they extend learning opportunities that can improve students’ academic performance.
