Job Opportunity: Program Manager, Expanded Learning

ExpandED Schools is dedicated to closing the learning gap by increasing access to enriched education experiences. We give children more hours in the school day, bring more role models into the classroom, and infuse their learning with enrichments in literacy, STEM, arts, and sports and opportunities to build character and leadership skills.   • EXPAND the school day: We add more time each day to help close the learning gap by up to 450 hours each school year.

  • ENHANCE the learning: We balance the curriculum with the arts, movement and personalized hands-on enrichments such as robotics, book clubs, debate and salsa dance.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Vice President of Expanded Learning Schools, the Program Manager works closely with a portfolio of schools and their community partners that are working to expand the school day. The Program Manager will support a set of schools and their partnering community organizations to facilitate change that improves kids’ lives. The Program Manager collaborates with principals and full-time site directors at each school to support high quality expanded learning and fidelity to the expanded learning school model. This position also supports the field of after-school and expanded learning citywide through training and workshops that build educators’ skills.


  • Coach and support school teams consisting of community and school leaders in the implementation of a quality expanded day that includes academics, including targeted literacy interventions, and enrichment activities such as arts, sports, STEM and leadership
  • Support the school team to infuse social emotional skills throughout the school day
  • Facilitate reflection and planning sessions of the school teams to support aligned actions toward common results and data-driven decision making
  • Oversee all aspects of a portfolio of schools, including school visits, consultation and coaching, service quality and compliance with Department of Health and Department of Education regulations
  • Oversee fiscal management of programs, including analysis and approval of budgets and quarterly expense reports; generating and approving grant payments to programs
  • Assess fidelity toward ExpandED Schools’ Expanded learning schools framework and identify opportunities for strengthening quality
  • Design and implement planning sessions and training workshops on promising practices in the field of after-school and expanded learning
  • Collaborate with the evaluation team to ensure that the requirements of grants are met
  • Collaborate on special projects as needed


Qualifications & Expectations of the Role:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of teaching or related experience in the education field required;
  • Master’s degree a plus
  • Experience supporting partnerships between schools and community organizations, particularly in a coaching capacity, strongly preferred
  • Experience with Social Emotional Learning skills as it connects to education a plus
  • Commitment to collaboration and participating as a member of a team that recognizes that it is strengthened through its diversity
  • Commitment to our mission to close the education gap
  • Strong cultural competence with respect for and extensive knowledge of the cultures of the various stakeholders we work with and the communities we serve
  • Strong facilitation skills of large and small groups
  • Strong computer skills, especially MS Office
  • Experience managing grants to non-profit organizations preferred
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills with a proven ability to execute tasks efficiently
  • Expertise in using data to improve programs and instruction
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and execute projects independently
  • Strong communication skills; including clear and persuasive speaking and writing
  • Flexibility, adaptability and comfort with complexity and change
  • Willingness to travel throughout NYC for schools visits and or to deliver site based trainings (up to 3-4 days per week)
