What is TASC?

The After-School Corporation is a nonprofit organization based in New York City. We work in New York and the nation to change public policy and expand public funding so all kids from all backgrounds can have high quality experiences beyond regular school hours that support their intellectual, creative and healthy development.

We develop and promote models for after-school and summer programs that demonstrably improve kids’ school engagement, motivation and achievement at a cost public funding can sustain, and that keep kids safe while parents work. We evaluate the effectiveness and impact of our programs and share findings with after-school educators around the country. When we find approaches that are transformative for kids, we work to expand them to reach millions of kids and families.

We propose policy solutions to unequal after-school opportunities that prevent kids with the greatest needs from having a rich and broad education. And we advocate for fair funding.

Does TASC operate after-school programs?

We do not operate after-school programs.

DonateWe build the public-private partnerships that make after-school programs strong and reliable year after year. We’re a two-way operating system: We assist the schools and community organizations that operate programs, by providing them with tools and resources such as engaging curricula, staff development and technical assistance. We collaborate with leaders to help build systems that respond to the needs of students, families, schools and communities.

New York City is where TASC tests promising models to expand the time and ways kids learn. We provide financial support to selected daily, comprehensive after-school and expanded learning time programs that serve thousands of kids each year in New York City schools.

Right now we’re piloting an initiative to expand learning time by 30 percent in 11 New York City elementary and middle schools. At the high school level we’re testing apprenticeship programs that keep kids on track for graduation and build the skills they need to be successful in college and careers.

What qualifies TASC to be an after-school leader?

Founded in 1998, TASC was the first nonprofit organization to set out to build a citywide K-12 after-school system. We created a model for daily programs that community organizations operate in partnership with schools, offering kids a rich array of activities. We commissioned an independent multi-year evaluation, which helped to define the elements of a quality program.

In our first decade we supported more than 150 community organizations working in more than 325 New York City public schools. We helped more than 300,000 kids. We leveraged four dollars for every dollar the Open Society Institute invested to found TASC and bring new opportunities to New York City kids.

With TASC programs as the model, New York City built the largest municipally-funded after-school system in the nation. In 1998, about 10,000 kids attended daily programs. In 2008, it was 140,000.
