TASC operates Demonstration Sites in four New York City public schools as laboratories for innovative after-school practices, and for developing strong relationships between programs and schools. The demonstration programs, launched in 2005, serve students at two elementary schools in Brooklyn and two in the Bronx. They are extensions of our collaborations with the City of New York and the NYC Department of Education.
Project Discover/Proyecto Descubrir promotes quality after-school science education at PS 2 and PS 58 in the Bronx. It's designed to reinforce science learning in early grades, which is key to sustaining kids' interest through the upper grades and into college. Through collaboration with the American Museum Of Natural History staff members at the Bronx programs learned to deliver a new inquiry-based, content-rich science curriculum tailored for after- school settings. Students do hands-on experiments using simple, every-day materials, and are encouraged to buzz with discussion and speculation as they learn the basics of the scientific method.
The Brooklyn Choice Project explores a model of extended learning and the seamless day in two Brooklyn charter schools, the Beginning with Children Charter School and Community Partnership Charter School. These sites introduce the “seamless day” concept by extending learning until 6 PM through “club” activities. Each student chooses from among physical, artistic, cultural, community and relationship-building activities. Community Partnership Charter School has created a daily program led by day school teachers working in collaboration with after-school group leaders. Students and families in the Brooklyn Choice programs also participate in community service and learning projects, which give kids a deeper understanding and appreciation for their communities. The project is funded by the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development, Cultural After School Adventures, The Beginning with Children Foundation and TASC.
