TASC after-school programs accomplish many goals. They meet the needs of families by serving large numbers of kids safely in the buildings where they attend school. Programs provide kids with rich content and the types of learning experiences that lead to their physical and emotional wellness, success in school and preparation for citizenship and careers. And programs must fit the schedules of those four out of five families where every adult works outside the home.

TASC’s program model, rooted in research and evaluation, is designed to accomplish all these goals at a cost of about $1,700 per child each year.

TASC model programs for elementary and middle school kids meet these qualifications:

  1. They are based in schools
  2. They are operated by community-based organizations in close partnership with school leaders
  3. They operate three hours a day every day school is in session
  4. They offer snack or supper
  5. They offer open enrollment to all children in a school
  6. They have a low student-to-staff ratio of ten-to-one
  7. They have a diverse staff of teachers, artists, college students, parents and other community members
  8. They employ a full-time, paid site coordinator
  9. They offer a variety of activities connected to but distinct from what’s offered during the school day, including academic support, arts, sports and community service
