AmeriCorps is a federally funded volunteer program that gives people a chance to serve their communities while earning money for college tuition or to repay student loans. TASC trains and supports AmeriCorps members to work in New York City after-school programs, and to help kids plan and execute community projects. Community service is a vital component of a comprehensive after-school program. More than 2,400 TASC AmeriCorps members have worked in after-school programs since 2000.
AmeriCorps members provide critical staffing resources to after-school programs, and that means programs can expand to serve more kids. AmeriCorps members are also responsible for recruiting volunteers, which further expands the capacity of programs. AmeriCorps members serve as role models to kids not only for their dedication to community service, but because they demonstrate their commitment to pursuing higher education. The primary financial reward for service is an education award that supports a member's tuition or student loan expenses.
During the 2009-10 school year, we are supporting two AmeriCorps programs that together will send 343 AmeriCorps members to work in daily, comprehensive after-school programs in New York City: Teach After 3 and Teach After 3 Recovery (funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act).
With NYC Service, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's initiative to promote civic engagement and the importance of community service in New York City, we are co-leading Service in Schools and managing the Mayor's Service Fellowship along with Children for Children. This program will place dedicated volunteers in public schools to facilitate and support the integration of community service and service learning into every school.
