            <title>2010 People’s Garden School Pilot Program</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>One grant award of $1 million to create a cooperative agreement with FNS to develop and run community gardens at high-poverty schools. Programs will teach students involved in the gardens about agriculture production practices, diet and nutrition. Gardens will contribute produce to supplement food provided at eligible schools. </p>

<p>Public or private non-profit organizations are eligible to apply. An evaluation of funded projects is required in order to learn more about the impacts of school gardens. Successful school garden initiatives will be marketed to the elementary and secondary education community for inspiration, ideas and replication.</p>]]></description>

            <title>K-12 &quot;Green&quot; Service-Learning Mini-Grants</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>K-12 educators, students and community organizations working with youth are invited to apply with a plan to implement a “green” service-learning project. Applicants who have attended a KIDS Consortium Summer Institute will have top priority for grant funding. Grant requests may be up to $250. </p>

<p>Projects must solve a problem or address a local need related to making communities healthier and more environmentally sustainable (e.g. decreasing use of products that are not environmentally friendly; creating outdoor green spaces and trails; promoting healthy eating habits, etc.).</p>]]></description>

            <title>Merck Family Fund Grants</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>The Merck Family Fund supports work by communities with few resources who are confronting significant social, economic and environmental challenges. The two areas of focus for the fund are to a) create green and open space, and b) support youth as agents of social change. Grants are limited to grassroots programs in New York, NY; Providence, RI; and Boston, MA. </p>

<p>Suggested programs include: 
<ul><li>Involving youth in the design, operation, and evaluation of a project</li>
<li>Training youth to learn skills, develop relationships, and gain experience while making a positive impact on the community</li>
<li>Supporting youth to research issues of concern, design strategies for change, and implement action plans</li>
<li>Identifying youth as important stakeholders in the health and well-being of the community</li></ul>]]></description>

            <title>2011 Better World Books/NCFL Libraries and Families Award</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>NCFL and Better World Books will reward and enhance existing family programming and expand literacy-building practices of families in library settings. Grants will help connect more families to their local libraries and expand literacy efforts in new and innovative ways.</p>

<p>NCFL anticipates awarding three $10,000 grant awards, one in each of the following three categories: local friends of the library programs, public/academic libraries, and urban libraries. In addition, award recipients will receive scholarships to attend the National Conference on Family Literacy in 2011.</p>]]></description>

            <title>Helping Hand Fund</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>All Stars supports small but pressing needs in the community through the Helping Hand Fund. Projects must answer the needs of disadvantaged kids in one or more of three tenet areas: rigorous academics, health and fitness and life skills. The Helping Hand Fund supports programs that embrace high standards and help kids strive for academic excellence, help kids get healthy, stay active and play safely, and give kids the life skills to tackle obstacles and open their eyes to new opportunities.</p>

<p>Programs for New York City area must operate within one of the five boroughs. Applications are reviewed on the last day of each month.</p>]]></description>
