What We Do

Through The Center for After-School Excellence, TASC offers after-school educators in New York City opportunities to earn college credits and professional certification and improve their daily practice. These formal and informal opportunities meet the needs of a diverse workforce that includes high school and college students, teaching artists, activity specialists and program leaders.

After-school educators can attend a year of customized undergraduate and graduate courses and earn credits at select campuses of the City University of New York.

We offer two-day continuing education courses in topics such as working with children with special needs and staff training workshops aligned with the NYSAN Program Quality Self-Assessment (QSA) Tool.

Research shows successful after-school programs are staffed by people trained to work with rich curriculum, forge strong and supportive relationships with kids, and partner with schools and families to achieve best results.

After-school educators need pathways to improve their practice, acquire formal and informal credentials and build careers, not only in after-school but also in teaching, youth work and nonprofit management. We advocate for training and professional development to be built into all after-school systems.

How Do We Do It

At the college level, we work with selected CUNY colleges to customize coursework and class schedules for after-school educators. We work with organizations that employ after-school educators to enroll them in college classes, and we support them in earning certification.

We also have two staff training tracks: one for programs affiliated with TASC, another for other New York City programs.

For TASC-affiliated programs, we deliver workshops that address core competencies such as implementing engaging curriculum and managing behavior. We also invite site coordinators to attend TASC Peer Conferences, which promote peer-to-peer learning.

New York City programs not affiliated with TASC can purchase curricular enrichments in the areas of after-school science, literacy and service-learning. Staff training workshops are provided with the purchase of enrichments.
